Over the past five years, the fractured relationship between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the royal family has been one of the most talked-about storylines in the monarchy’s modern history. From their decision to step back from royal duties and move to California to the bombshell revelations in interviews, documentaries, and Harry’s memoir Spare, the couple’s departure has left lasting cracks within the institution. When it comes to their relationship, Harry and  Markle have always presented a united front. But when it comes to how they view the fractured ties with the royal family, they reportedly see things a little differently.

According to a source close to the couple, “They’re aware of everything going on in England, but they’re being left out of the details; there’s clearly no trust.”The insider explained that while Markle has her eyes firmly on the future, Harry continues to wrestle with the past. “She is very business about it,” the source noted, adding that Markle remains supportive but wishes Harry could unburden himself from lingering pain, as reported by PEOPLE!

“She supports him through everything — the lawsuits, the tension with his family — but she wishes he could be more present in the life they’ve built together,” the source said.

This theme of broken trust has been echoed by royal commentators as well. Earlier, royal expert Kinsey Schofield spoke about the issue, highlighting how the question of reliability continues to complicate matters between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family. Referring to the recent discussions between King Charles’s aides and Prince Harry, she suggested the couple had once again made it difficult for the royals to place confidence in them. Speaking to Sky News Australia, Schofield remarked that while the King and Harry could potentially meet in September, the story itself raised red flags. “I also think that somebody leaked this story and I don’t see the value in it [for the King],” she said.

The distance between Harry and King Charles has become one of the most painful aspects of the ongoing rift. Their silence has stretched across five years, even as the King undergoes treatment for cancer. Harry has been open about how much the estrangement weighs on him, per Marie Claire. “I don’t know how much longer my father has,” he told the BBC earlier this year, before adding the stark admission: “He won’t speak to me.”

Royal experts say the breakdown in trust makes reconciliation difficult. Biographer Sally Bedell Smith told PEOPLE! “The King and William don’t trust Harry and Markle with any kind of confidential conversation.”

Inside palace walls, there is little push to change that, reportedly. Queen Camilla, criticized in Harry’s memoir Spare, is said to avoid the issue, as per a source, and Prince William has no interest in reconnecting. Observers say the King’s illness only heightens the urgency. “If you have that level of breach in a family, and you are estranged, you run that risk every day of having something unfathomable to deal with,” said Catherine Mayer, author of Charles: The Heart of a King.
