Palace Unveils Rare Footage of King Charles at 21 ― Speaking Out on an Issue Still Defining His Reign
The footage also revealed the monarch watching himself in action on screen while emotionally recollecting the moment a while later.
King Charles has been an influential advocate for environmental sustainability, focusing on biodiversity, organic farming, and climate action. As Prince of Wales, he convened global leaders and launched initiatives like the Sustainable Markets Initiative and "Terra Carta" to encourage nature-focused business practices. He demonstrated commitment through renewable energy on his estates and sustainable vehicle use. Hence, it comes as no surprise that Buckingham Palace shared a rare footage of the then 21-year-old Prince to commemorate London Climate Action Week.
The video was released on the Royal Family's official Instagram and showcased a brief glimpse of the young King in 1970, giving a speech from the documentary Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision, which highlighted his commitment to environmentalism through The King’s Foundation. The footage also revealed the monarch watching himself in action on screen while emotionally recollecting the moment a while later. "Well, it was quite a long time ago. And I remember being profoundly concerned about this," he said. Speaking in Cardiff over 50 years ago, the King highlighted the dire effects of pollution, categorizing it as "cancerous." He pointed to the growing threat of oil pollution at sea and chemical runoff from factories that contaminates rivers and contributes to oceanic filth. The footage was aptly captioned: "In this clip from ‘Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision’, a 21-year-old Prince of Wales speaks out about pollution at a time when few in public life were willing to do so."
The King reaffirmed his commitment to combating climate change during a reception at St James’s Palace for world leaders, scientists, and business leaders, discussing actions to reduce super pollutants in the atmosphere, the caption continued. King Charles had also emphasized his commitment to environmental issues during a 2020 event at Davos, calling for urgent action. Even after becoming monarch in 2022, he has continued to advocate for the environment. More recently, he hosted a significant event at St James's Palace with 250 guests, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, to discuss super pollutants. This gathering received praise from COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, recognizing the King's global influence in environmental advocacy.
Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision premiered on Prime Video in early 2026, reaching over 240 countries and territories, and detailed Charles’ philosophy of harmony with the planet. "Nature is our sustainer - we are a part of Nature. Therefore, what we do to her, we do to ourselves," he said. Charles' belief in a sustainable future is embodied by his King’s Foundation, which oversees gardens at Highgrove House and is based at Dumfries House in Scotland, celebrating sustainability and heritage skills. Last year marked the foundation's 35th anniversary.
