Meghan Was Not Solely Responsible For The Royal Feud — but This Royal May Have Played A Bigger Role
Meghan Markle has carried the blame for the royal fallout alone for several years, however, another royal is equally responsible for the move.
Meghan Markle has been named as the culprit behind her and Prince Harry’s departure from the royal family in 2020. The public even came up with a cruel moniker for the move, ‘Megxit’, a play on ‘Brexit’. Over the years, the Duke of Sussex has expressed his unhappiness within the Firm and even took responsibility for choosing to leave the monarchy. However, his wife continues to be painted as the big bad villain of a family soap opera.
Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine recently wrote that the Duchess of Sussex was not the only one to cause the royal fallout. In fact, she named another royal who shoulders the blame. “For all her mistakes, I don’t think Meghan deliberately set out to be a disruptor. And I don’t think it’s fair to hold her solely responsible for the shambles that followed,” she mentioned. Vine also added another facet to the blame game, “It’s easy to always blame the woman; but the truth is Harry was as much a part of Megxit as she was.”
Markle and Harry’s rift with the royal family has often been connected to the former Suits star’s alleged inability to follow protocol. On the other hand, Vine believed that the Duke “never got over losing his mother” and held a “deep resentment” towards his father. She wrote, “The truth is, Megxit was never just about Meghan and her struggles to adapt to royal life; it was just as much about Harry’s trauma, finally coming to a head after all those years. He wanted out as much as she did – and she was his escape route.”
Vine further noted that Harry’s discontent with the institution predated his relationship with Markle. “For Harry, Meghan represented freedom – from his father and his stepmother, whom he blamed for his mother’s unhappiness, and from the obligations of his birth. Even before he married Meghan, he was searching, whether consciously or unconsciously, for a way to escape his ‘generational curse’ and construct a narrative of his own,” she wrote.
Vine claimed that unlike his elder brother Prince William, the Duke didn’t have to “worry about the succession” and hence chose a bride “for whom none of it had any significance, who viewed it as just another role, and a faintly absurd one at that”. However, the Duchess had claimed in their Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, that there was “no version” of her joining the royal family and not doing everything she could to “fit in”. She further added, “I don't want to embarrass the family.”
After several years of being estranged, Harry and Markle finally reunited with King Charles last month in a private meeting at Highgrove. The monarch also met his grandkids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the first time in four years.
