Meghan Markle is said to have taken a definitive step in distancing herself from her father, Thomas Markle. She has done so by removing his contact details from her phone and ruling out any in-person visits. While he is recovering from a serious operation overseas in the Philippines, she is reportedly keeping communication indirect. Image Source: YouTube | @60MinutesAustralia

Meghan has reportedly deleted her father’s phone number and has made no plans to visit him, highlighting the continued breakdown of their relationship. The 44-year-old has not been on speaking terms with the family member since 2018, despite his recent surgery, which was intense in nature to amputate his leg. As per the Express, Meghan’s decision has showcased both emotional distance and caution, while remaining unwilling to re-establish direct contact even amid his severe health crisis.

The latest developments have followed reports from earlier this week that Meghan sent a letter to her father. It got hand-delivered to him at the hospital. The letter is understood to have expressed her feelings about his repeated decisions to give interviews to the media discussing their fractured bond. Those familiar with the situation indicated that the Duchess hoped the letter would remain private. However, she deliberately avoided calling him, fearing the call could be overheard in a hospital setting. At the time of writing, it has been understood that Meghan has not received a response to the letter, nor has she had any contact with her father since its delivery. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex visits New Zealand House to sign a book of condolence on behalf of The Royal Family. Royal Commentator Rob Shuter, via Substack, claimed that Meghan is emotionally exhausted due to the dire circumstances. While sharing his take on her state of mind, he revealed that Markle is “upset, frustrated, but mostly tired” because her father intends to profit from the media by giving interviews. He quoted a source and mentioned, “Thomas is angling for a payday. He wants a TV deal. He's already done the print interview and the photo — now he's shopping the on-air version.” Meanwhile, another source believed, “He [Thomas] keeps saying the picture of him without a leg would be 'powerful.' He thinks TV networks will bite. He's asking around for numbers. He knows exactly how this tango works — he's done it before.”

After Thomas was out of surgery, Meghan’s spokesperson confirmed that she had corresponded with her father. They tried to push back against the Daily Mail report suggesting otherwise. The spokesperson negated the said publication's claims, insisting that the Duchess did make a private attempt to reach out. This rebuttal, however, led to further discussion in the media, particularly regarding the tone used to address the mail’s reporting and its journalist, Caroline Garam, who has reportedly remained close to Thomas during this tough time as he recovers.Cover Image Source: Getty Images | Jemal Countess

Broadcaster Mark Dolan weighed in on this dispute and criticized Meghan’s spokesperson. The former argued that it demonstrated poor judgment because of Thomas Markle’s fragile health. Speaking to the Express, Dolan explained, “He's [Thomas] in a foreign country thousands of miles away. He's got his son, Thomas Markle Jr, but he's got major issues, too. He's got health problems, he's broke, and he's not been able to be at the hospital 24/7, so Caroline has filled the gap.” He added, “And what is her [Graham] reward? A subtle attack from the ruthless Sussex public relations machine, throwing shade at the Mail on Sunday for running this story.”
