The royal family is still grappling with the fallout from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping down as senior royals. After the two left the UK for the States, Markle was largely blamed for the alleged change in Harry’s priorities and demeanor. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, a video of the former actress explaining why she faced the brunt of the hate is making the rounds on the internet.
The video, a clip from the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, went viral on TikTok. It featured Markle finally addressing claims she changed Harry after they began dating. She said, “In any relationship, oftentimes, when a guy falls in love with a girl, his buddies are like, 'Oh my God, he changed. I don't see him anymore. He is always with her.' And you blame the girl. They are angry with her because she is the thing that took him away.”
Markle stressed, “And that is whether you are in a small town or a big city or in the royal family. He wouldn't ever have been attracted to or interested in me if he hadn't already been on his own path.” She further opined, “Most people need to find someone to blame to try to, like, reconcile how you are feeling because something has changed and it doesn't feel good and you don't like it and what is the thing that is different.” Alluding to their last week in London before their move to the US, she added, “But you blame me... because also if you can blame me, then you have no fault. So that last week, it was bittersweet.”
Although Markle did not confirm whether she was alluding to Harry’s friends in the UK or his family in her statement, it was widely understood that she was hinting at both. While most know Harry's family blamed Markle for his royal exit, what is lesser known is that the Duchess had a fallout with her husband’s buddies during a small vacation. Biographer Tom Bower detailed the incident in his book Revenge. He alleged that Markle, on a shooting trip with Harry and his friends, had managed to ruffle a lot of feathers, Newsweek reported. She allegedly “challenged every guest whose conversation contravened her values.” Bower wrote, “According to Harry's friends, again and again she reprimanded them about the slightest inappropriate nuance. Nobody was exempt.” He cited that Harry's friends’ jokes were about “sexism, feminism, and transgender people," which Markle found distasteful. Meanwhile, Bower argued that Harry's pal found her 'too woke,' in whose company the Duke had become a tree hugger.
