Prince Harry and Meghan Markle hit things off on their very first date and have been going strong ever since. While most of their close friends attended their 2018 fairytale wedding, not everyone took a liking to the Duchess. Royal author Tom Quinn revealed that one of Harry’s best friends hated Markle, claiming her progressive views didn't make her the right match for the Prince.
Quinn told Fox News, “One of Harry's best friends said, 'I can't understand what Harry sees in her. She's a tree hugger. She's so woke.” The expert added, “But I think Harry was, in a way, entranced by the fact that Meghan was able to offer him an alternative world from the one he’d always known.”
Quinn revealed that it wasn't just Harry's friends who didn't like Markle; she was reportedly not a fan of them either. He recalled an incident where Markle and Harry joined some of his friends from his school for a pheasant shoot at Sandringham. He continued, “She hated it because all of Harry’s friends were making the sorts of jokes that suggested they disliked everything to do with ‘woke’...They just don’t like that kind of thing because, to a large extent, it’s seen as Left-wing.” Other than Harry’s friends, who thought he became ‘too woke’ after meeting Markle, former Palace staffers also echoed the same concerns.
Quinn, in his book Yes Ma'am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, quoted Palace aides as having said that Harry was “one of the easiest and nicest people to work for” before meeting Markle. As reported by The New York Times, a former staff member said, “That terrible modern word ‘woke’ has often been used, and although I don’t like it, I can see why it is applied to Harry — he did become far more concerned about social issues and the rights of minorities than he’d ever been before Meghan’s arrival.” One of the Duke’s former senior aides also claimed that he felt Harry went from being 'pretty easy-going' to being 'more disgruntled'.
The book also alleged that Palace staffers coined derogatory nicknames for the Sussexes, given their ‘woke’ nature. A royal source told The Sun, "Some of the youngest staff at Kensington Palace would've applauded this, no doubt, but the older staff thought he'd become a tree-hugging Leftie.” The insider continued, “It's true that her nickname for a while was the 'Duchess of Difficult', but she had other, friendlier nicknames, including Mystic Meg, which came about because she was so new agey, so woke, about so many things.” Quinn's book also mentions that Markle was called ‘Me-Gain’ and ‘Di Lite’, allegedly because staff found her difficult to work with.
