King Charles Picks Up Yet Another Instrument on Northern Ireland Trip — and He's Better Than You'd Think
King Charles has been displaying his hidden musical talents lately. The monarch ended up playing a popular tune on the ukulele to the delight of the crowd.
King Charles usually participates in local cultural activities to connect with people. It has also been seen on his three-day visit to Northern Ireland with Queen Camilla. As they were touring Newtownards, the monarch displayed his hidden talent when he had an impromptu jam session with the Loughries Men’s Ukulele Ensemble at Ards Allotments by playing the ukulele. The King belted out a tune without any hesitation and earned a huge round of applause from the locals. He also surprisingly revealed that he is a big fan of a UK-based ukulele group. “There’s a marvellous organisation called the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, it’s fantastic,” he told the crowd present.
The famed group is known for its unique and entertaining performances that blend traditional ukulele music with popular songs. They have gained recognition for their quirky interpretations and arrangements, appealing to a wide audience through their comedic and engaging stage presence. According to Mirror UK, a member of the Loughries Men’s Ukulele Ensemble then made a quick request. They said, “Maybe you can get us into the Palladium!” To which the King amusingly replied, “It’s such a great instrument,” before adding, “Do you remember the words? Wait ‘til you get to my age.” Towards the end of their interaction, another member expressed. “It was a great honour to play for you.” “You’re very kind,” the King complimented.
Charles' visit to Ards Allotments was unique, and Maurice Patton developed the community garden over 20 years ago after observing the monarch's enthusiasm for gardening. During the tour, Charles met volunteers, gardeners, and growers who use the space to grow fresh vegetables and make social connections. King Charles has publicly embraced his musical interests, demonstrating a modern and eclectic taste. Since early 2025, his activities have included launching "The King's Music Room" playlist on Apple Music, experimenting with DJing at Aviva Studios, playing a carrot recorder with the London Vegetable Orchestra, and engaging with traditional music through Bodhran drums in Northern Ireland. He also supports young musicians, such as participating in workshops at the National Youth Music Theatre. These musical engagements are viewed as a joyful aspect of his duties, aimed at bridging cultural gaps within the Commonwealth.
As for the monarch’s health, in 2025, he shared positive updates about his cancer treatment, BBC reported. His medical staff has noticed progress, prompting a shift to management rather than rigorous therapy. Despite his illness, he continues to perform royal duties; however, since he is not fully in remission, the king continues to be closely monitored and escorted by his personal physician during his official trips. During the visit, King Charles left a lasting impression on the locals of Northern Ireland with his wit, charm, and keen sense of interest in community projects.
