King Charles Handed a ‘Huge Crisis' by Andrew — Expert Warns It’s ‘As Bad As Diana’s Death’

Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of sexual abuse that some readers may find distressing.
The House of Windsor has weathered many storms, few of which have managed to 'shake the Palatial walls' as the tragic death of Princess Diana. That is, until Prince Andrew came along with his very own brand of what can be deemed a royal catastrophe. From shady friendships and business deals to allegations of abuse, the former Duke of York’s fall from grace has been nothing short of spectacular, so much so that one expert has dubbed it 'as bad as Diana’s death.'

The recent scandal that seemed like a ripple of his past controversies has now thrown the monarchy into choppy waters, sparking intense backlash. Royal expert Jennie Bond weighed in on the same during her appearance on ITV’s Loose Women. She described this chapter for the royals as a 'huge crisis,' comparing the fallout to the days after Diana’s death.
Diana’s untimely demise in 1997 had left the monarchy reeling, not because of the tragedy itself, but the royal family’s perceived coldness in the immediate aftermath. The late Queen’s choice to remain at Balmoral to shield Princes William and Harry drew widespread criticism and public ire.
Bond thereby explored the past to the unrelenting nature of Andrew’s scandalous presence and its corrosive impact on the monarchy and King Charles's legacy. She said, “It's gone on and on. It's been relentless, and I do think this is a huge crisis for the royal family.” She argued that while Diana’s death was a heartbreaking event, the current scandal is tainted by sordid allegations that strike at the core of public trust. “I have said even as bad as Diana's death because, as tragic as that was, this is such a sordid tale, and I know Andrew has denied all the accusations,” Bond explained.

What makes the 'Andrew issue' worse is the exposure of the inconsistencies in his accounts, notably around when he severed ties with Epstein. A 2011 email from Andrew to Epstein recently came to light, contradicting his claims that contact had ceased months earlier. Compounding the crisis is the posthumous memoir of Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre claims that she was coerced into a sexual relationship with Andrew as a teenager. The Prince has consistently denied these allegations, famously stating in his 2019 BBC Newsnight interview that he could not recall meeting her.

Amid the growing storm, Andrew finally announced that he will no longer use his royal titles, in consultation with his brother, the King. Reports suggest significant pressure is now building for him to vacate his grand 30-bedroom residence at the Crown Estate’s Royal Lodge, marking a further erosion of his standing and privileges.
