King Charles and Queen Camilla Set for a Landmark Moment in Wales Next Week
The King and Queen will be honored with recitals, performances and a parting gift as they engage in royal traditions.
King Charles and Queen Camilla last appeared together in September at the British Museum in London, where they hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron during their UK visit. They have continued to support various causes individually, even amid difficult times due to numerous scandals affecting the royal family. Meanwhile, the latest reports suggest that Charles and Camilla will be traveling to Wales to honor a historic tradition.
The King and Queen are set to visit Wales next week, i.e., on the 15th, for the ceremonial opening of the seventh Senedd in Cardiff. This marks their first ever attendance at the historic event since Charles became King. The programme includes an honorary welcome by guard formations from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh, and the 157 (Welsh) Regiment Royal Logistics Corps, alongside a Royal Navy Guard of Honour that will provide a Royal Salute upon their arrival.
Followed by a civic line-up before honoring Llywydd Huw Irranca-Davies MS and the First Minister of Wales, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS. Inside the Senedd, Their Majesties will then meet with party leaders, the Chief Executive, the Clerk, and the Deputy Presiding Officer. The King’s Harpist, Mared Pugh-Evans, is also set to perform as they enter the Senedd. During the inaugural event, the Llywydd is expected to make opening remarks, followed by the King’s remarks and comments from the First Minister, Royal Central reported.
The King and Queen will be honored with recitals, including a special poem by National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa, and a performance of "O Gymru" by the Merched Plastaf Choir. After the ceremony, they will meet members of the Welsh Youth Parliament, Senedd Commissioners, Members of the Senedd, and representatives from community and youth organizations at the Cwrt. Before their departure, Their Majesties are set to receive a thoughtful parting gift: a posy from Noah Jones, the great-grandson of a caretaker who saved children during the 1966 Aberfan disaster. Meanwhile, this visit symbolizes the evolving relationship between the monarchy and the Senedd.
Charles and Camilla commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Senedd back in July 2024. They also attended the opening ceremony in October 2021, which was graced by Queen Elizabeth II, when they held the titles of Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.
The Senedd, originally established in 1999 as the National Assembly for Wales, has evolved into a full parliament capable of making laws in devolved areas and overseeing the Welsh Government. The 2026 election marked a significant change, increasing the number of Members from 60 to 96, symbolizing better governance.
