Body Language Expert Explains Why William and Kate Finally Feel ‘Safe Enough’ to Show PDA

Prince William and Kate Middleton have recently toed the line of PDA in their latest outings, and it seems that the couple is entering their new era.

Long gone are the days when Prince Charming slipping a glass slipper onto Cinderella’s foot was the ultimate fairytale. Today, Prince William and Kate Middleton are the main characters of modern romance. For years, the senior working royals kept public displays of affection to a minimum—relying on subtle hand placements, gentle pecks, and occasional embraces to express their love. Recently, however, that dynamic has shifted. The beloved couple has grown noticeably more comfortable showcasing their affection, letting the public catch a glimpse of their romantic side.

When Middleton completed the Three Peaks Challenge, she shared a carousel of photos featuring William, their children, her parents, and her brother to mark the milestone. However, the photo she chose to lead the post was a sweet image of her husband tightly embracing her. Body language expert Judi James noted that the candid photo offered a rare “glimpse” into the “honest intensity of their feelings for each other.”

While completing such an arduous challenge following her health battle was an emotional victory, her decision to proudly and boldly share this intimate moment pointed to a different kind of milestone—a newfound confidence with the “public and the press.” “Their rituals suggest there’s been no real change in the intensity of their love for one another—what’s happened is they have finally felt safe enough to trust, not each other, but the public and the press, to show it,” James told the Daily Mail. “It’s a hug that suggests all inhibitions are being jettisoned as the desire to greet and cherish takes over.” The royal's cancer journey seemingly ushered in a “new chapter” for the couple.

The post-Three Peaks Challenge embrace was hardly a one-off moment. Earlier this month, when William played in the Royal Charity Polo Cup, Middleton was there to cheer him on. The couple could barely hide their affection, walking off the field hand-in-hand. James once again noted that their recent displays of PDA are “yet another sign that the latest chapter of their marriage—the one where they feel free to show their levels of mutual love and adoration by more tactile behaviors in public—is still very much a part of their personal and generational royal brand now.”

According to James, the turbulent marriage of King Charles and Princess Diana served as a “salutary lesson” for William on “how risky and dangerous emotional baring can be for the royals.” She added, “William always acted like a man concerned that his own wife might go down the same path and become a lightning rod for intrusive attention. This fear and desire to protect Kate led to several years of emotional suppression in public.”

The expert further mentioned that the Prince of Wales had “learned to trust and relax a little.” The couple made several joint appearances recently, the latest being their family outing at Wimbledon. Their older kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were there to accompany them.
