Princess Kate’s latest outing had a few details that felt oddly familiar. As she stepped out for Addiction Awareness Week, the Princess of Wales' warmth and easy charm echoed Princess Diana’s many public appearances. Kate seemed happy and eager to connect with people rather than simply observe. The similarities may be subtle, but they didn't go unnoticed for royal watchers.

Kate also used the visit to speak openly about the stigma surrounding addiction. She urged people to look at addiction with more understanding rather than simply judging those affected by it. Diana had taken a similar approach years earlier when she visited the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto in 1991 as part of her royal tour and met young people struggling with drug addiction. She spent time talking with them and hearing their stories at a time when addicts were often pushed to the margins or looked down upon. Kate shared a warm hug with Steph Sampson, a 45-year-old mother recovering from alcoholism during the visit. The small moment brought back memories of Diana, who, during her public appearances, always put people at ease through simple gestures like hugs and handshakes. During a 1987 visit to Middlesex Hospital, she famously shook hands with a man with HIV without wearing gloves at a time when many people still feared casual contact. Kate’s easy, hands-on approach carried a similar sense of warmth and made the engagement feel less formal.

Kate carries a very personal link to Diana, which was on display during the outing. She wore the late Princess’s famous sapphire engagement ring as she visited The Forward Trust in Southend. Diana chose the Garrard ring when she became engaged to then-Prince Charles in 1981. Nearly three decades later, Prince William gave the same ring to Kate when he proposed in 2010. Seeing it on Kate’s hand during another charity engagement made the connection especially fitting.

Kate also made a point of sitting with the folks she met, listening closely as they opened up about their experiences with addiction and recovery. Her style of engagement felt very Diana.
