Royal Photographer Shares How Charles and Kate 'Bounced Back' From Their 'Challenging Period'

The photographer reflected on what he dubbed a “very special time” for the monarchy, one marked by resilience, unity, and a powerful return to form.

After months marked by illness, upheaval, and emotional strain for the royal family, a picture of resilience has begun to emerge, one that royal photographer Chris Jackson has described as remarkable to witness. Reflecting on the challenges overcome by King Charles and Kate Middleton, as they battled cancer, Jackson argued that their steady comeback strengthened them as a family. Ahead of the release of his book, Modern Majesty, he reflected on what he dubbed a “very special time” for the monarchy, one marked by resilience, unity, and a powerful return to form.

Jackson applauded both Charles and Middleton for the strength they have shown in the wake of their diagnoses. He told Alan Titchmarsh on ITV's Love Your Weekend that witnessing their recovery has been 'incredible.' He reflected on the 'challenging' transitional period, including Charles assuming full responsibility as a monarch in the middle of his and Middleton’s cancer battles, and shared that the pair 'bounced back' with admirable energy. He further quipped that “keeping up with the King today is very hard... he is working left, right and centre at so many different engagements.”

An insider once echoed the same sentiments, revealing how the renewed vitality strengthened relationships within the royal family. As per Us Weekly, a source said, “The King has always had a close, warm, and unique relationship with the Princess.” They added, “She has a great love and respect for him and his position. When they were in the hospital together, there was a lot of toddling down the corridor to spend time with her. He has been encouraging and supporting her throughout.” Their time together only deepened their mutual support.

Prince William has also openly spoken about how difficult last year was for the family. During a conversation with actor Eugene Levy for The Reluctant Traveler, during a tour of Windsor Castle, he admitted that it had been the most challenging year of his life, as he watched his father and his wife navigate the health crisis. Yet, he offered a hopeful update, saying, “Things are good. Everything is progressing in the right way, which is all good news.”

For Jackson, who has photographed the royal family for over 2 decades, working for Getty Images, the past few years have made him realize the significance of documenting their lives. He recalled the unforgettable experience of standing behind Charles and Queen Camilla as they stepped out as the new King and Queen. He was careful not to obstruct his colleagues' shots as the crowd cheered and the red arrows roared overhead. It was, he said, “The epitome of front row seats.” Beyond the moment of historic impact, Jackson said unplanned moments like William joining a volleyball team remained among the most rewarding. Witnessing the royal family’s impact during global tours and seeing the excitement they inspire in many continues to fuel his passion.
