Princess Anne Makes Emotional Tribute to King Harald With Special Brooch

The Princess Royal marked the occasion dressed in black, but what caught attention was the brooch she wore, which carried a deeper meaning.

Princess Anne attended the funeral of King Harald V in Norway today. The Norwegian monarch passed away on August 28 at the age of 89, bringing his 35-year reign to an end. The Princess Royal marked the occasion dressed in black, but what caught attention was the brooch she adorned, which carried a deeper meaning.

Anne’s choice of jewelry stood out against her sombre outfit. She pinned her Gold Ribbon brooch to her black jacket, a piece dating back to the mid-20th century. The diamond-set design features a delicate bow tied in a knot. According to Tatler, the brooch is also one of the oldest pieces in the royal collection and has been with her for decades. She was first seen wearing it in 1969, when she met Apollo 8 commander Colonel Frank Borman at Buckingham Palace. Since then, Anne has worn the brooch for a number of important occasions, and this time she decided to wear it as a personal tribute to the late King Harald.

OSLO, NORWAY - SEPTEMBER 09: Prince William, Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, Princess Royal, Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko during the funeral of King Harald V of Norway on September 09, 2026 in Oslo, Norway. Born on February 21, 1937, King Harald V of Norway was the first Norwegian-born monarch to inherit the Norwegian throne in over 600 years, reigning from 1991 until his death on August 28, 2026. He represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games and, in 1968, married Sonja Haraldsen, breaking with royal convention by marrying a non-royal. The couple had two children, and he was succeeded by his son, King Haakon VIII of Norway. (Photo by Chris Jackson/Getty Images)

It is not clear where the brooch originally came from, but Anne has clearly held onto it for a reason. Over the years, she has worn the piece for several memorable occasions, including her 70th birthday portrait in 2020. The Princess Royal is also known for re-wearing pieces from her wardrobe, so the much-loved brooch fits right in with her approach to fashion.

Anne joined the procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral alongside Prince William. While the Prince of Wales was there on behalf of King Charles, Anne had a more personal reason for attending, as she is godparent to Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon. He took the constitutional oath just days after the death of his father.

The Princess Royal was chosen as one of Haakon’s godparents in 1973. She is one of six godparents named for the new King, alongside King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Princess Astrid of Norway, the late Prince Carl Bernadotte, and his grandfather, the late King Olav V.
