Prince William Has a ‘Brutal Test’ From King Charles Standing Between Him and the Throne
Prince William allegedly believes that his father's expectations could create further instability in the monarchy.
Although King Charles has scaled back his cancer treatment, insiders suggest he has one key expectation from Prince William should he ascend the throne sooner than anticipated: reconcile with Prince Harry. The monarch believes burying the hatchet and putting duty above bitter feelings would prove his heir's commitment to the Crown. Meanwhile, William, who has been estranged from Harry for over six years, allegedly thinks that such symbolic gestures could create further instability and undermine the seriousness of his brother's actions.
In a final attempt to heal old wounds, Charles is said to be pushing his eldest son to set aside his bitter feelings for the sake of duty. As reported by AOL Today, the source said, "Within palace circles, there is a clear sense that the King sees reuniting with Harry as a 'brutal, ultimate test' for William as he prepares him to become king." They added, "He [Charles] has made it known that reuniting with Harry – however difficult for William – is part of the test to see whether he is truly ready to be a king, because he believes demonstrating unity is essential to the monarchy's future."
Moreover, the monarch reportedly concluded that the long-standing rift between his two sons would never be solved without intervention and forgiveness. "From his [Charles's] perspective, this is about leadership, and he has effectively told William that he must rise above the personal and prove he can act in the interests of the Crown, even if it goes against his instincts," urging him to 'put duty before emotion' and accept that a reconciliation with Harry is part of that responsibility. The Prince of Wales, however, is said to be skeptical about his father's expectations, allegedly worrying that such a symbolic gesture could worsen the situation.
Against that backdrop, an insider spoke of William's alleged point of view: "He does not believe this situation can be fixed through appearances or symbolic gestures, and he feels the seriousness of what has happened is not being fully acknowledged," referring to Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from the firm. They continued, "William is convinced that bringing Harry and Meghan back into any formal role would not strengthen the monarchy—in his view, it could create further instability." They further explained that the pressure was reportedly 'reinforcing his determination to stand his ground' regarding a potential reunion with the Duke of Sussex.
Indeed, Harry has also penned in his memoir, Spare, how his father had urged him and William to set their differences aside. According to him, after Prince Philip's 2021 funeral, William was acting cold owing to his and Markle's exit and their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. Charles is reported to have said, "Please, boys, don't make my final years a misery." The Duke portrayed his father as less of an angry monarch and more as a weary parent trying to stop the breakdown between his sons.
