Prince Harry Could Be Dreaming of a Royal Return — But Not in Britain
Prince Harry may have found a different path back to royal life, but the Palace reportedly is not convinced.
Prince Harry stepped down as a working royal in 2020, but is there a possibility he might be thinking of a comeback? A source has revealed that Harry believes he found a new way to reconnect with royal life, but the idea is unlikely to become a reality.
Royal expert Rob Shuter wrote on his Substack, Naughty But Nice, that palace insiders claim Harry has privately floated the idea of taking on an official overseas role for the Crown—with Australia reportedly emerging as his dream destination. An insider stated, “Meghan has no interest in moving back to Britain. Harry believes an overseas role, particularly in Australia, would allow them to serve the King while keeping the life he has built with Meghan and the children.”
Shuter noted that Harry's reported idea isn't without precedent, pointing to the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII), who was appointed Governor of the Bahamas after abdicating the throne in 1936. According to well-placed royal sources, Harry sees that chapter of royal history as proof that official royal roles can exist outside the traditional palace setting.
However, the proposal has reportedly found little support within the Palace. A source said, “The Palace isn’t entertaining the idea. The late Queen made it crystal clear there would be no half-in, half-out arrangement. That policy didn’t end with her.”
The author also noted that there is a major practical hurdle. He explained that Australia's Governor-General is appointed by the King only on the advice of the Australian Prime Minister, meaning Buckingham Palace has no say in who gets the role. As a result, any such appointment would ultimately be beyond the King's control.
“Harry thinks there’s a creative compromise. The institution believes the rules already exist. They’re not going to reinvent the monarchy for one family member,” an insider shared.
While Charles is reportedly still open to mending his relationship with the Duke of Sussex, welcoming him back into the royal fold is a completely different matter. Repairing family ties and returning to official royal duties are being treated as two separate issues. A source explained, “Harry may still dream of being a working royal again. Inside the Palace, that chapter has already been closed.”
Charles recently met with the Sussexes while Harry was in the UK to promote the 2027 Invictus Games. It was the first time the King met with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, in four years.
