Netflix Eyes Another Royal Couple After Harry & Meghan — and No, It’s Not William & Kate
A PR expert reveals why an 'under-the-radar' couple is Netflix’s best move to deliver real royal content over the Sussexes.
A new rivalry is brewing on the airwaves — with Zara and Mike Tindall tipped to challenge Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the streaming crown. While the Duke and Duchess continue to develop scripted content and lifestyle shows in Montecito, industry experts suggest the Tindalls possess a relatability factor that could allow their projects to easily surpass those of the Sussexes. Despite the California-based couple’s massive global profile, public sentiment has cooled following a string of overly produced content, according to critics. In contrast, Zara and Mike are being hailed as the ‘authentic’ alternative, with a celebrity PR expert suggesting that the couple’s lack of pretense is their greatest weapon.
As reported by the Express, PR expert Kayley Cornelius highlighted that while the Tindalls may lack the Sussexes’ level of fame, the sentiment surrounding them is definitely “more positive”—this indicates that any future content from the pair would “likely land much better with audiences.” She believes that a move into the streaming world could “shift the narrative entirely,” adding, “Audiences want something that feels real and unfiltered, and Mike and Zara are likely the best placed to deliver that without it feeling overly produced or forced…it could well blow their project out of the water.”
The Tindalls are no strangers to the camera. For instance, Mike became a fan favorite during his 2022 stint on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, proving that he has the “personality to carry a series.” This is something that even former royal butler Grant Harrold also agrees on, noting that the couple’s daily life is a goldmine for producers. “They are not media shy, and both have done plenty of interviews, and Mike in particular has built a strong public profile. If you look at their lifestyle, where they live, the horse trials, the whole setup, it all naturally lends itself to television,” Harrold argued, highlighting, “They’re also really good fun and I think they could produce some exciting and highly viewed content, probably more in line with what Netflix and their viewers want.”
From a PR perspective, Harrold observed that allowing cameras to follow the Queen’s granddaughter and her husband offers a “rare, authentic glimpse into their world, and that is where it gets interesting.” If the project resonates with audiences, he argued, then it could easily overthrow the content brought forth by the Duke and Duchess. Another thing that works perfectly for the Tindalls is that—unlike the Sussexes—they have managed to maintain a resolutely loyal relationship with the monarchy all while carving out successful private careers of their own.
Additionally, both Zara and her husband are seen as “hard-working people” who connect the old royal traditions with modern fame. As Netflix allegedly looks for fresh content to follow Harry’s polo documentary and With Love, Meghan, the Tindalls represent a low-risk, high-reward opportunity to provide the behind-the-scenes access viewers crave without the political baggage.
