Meghan Markle Steps Back From Memoir Plans Despite Huge Offers
Meghan Markle made her debut as a well-known author by releasing the children's book The Bench.
A few years ago, when Prince Harry’s memoir Spare was released to the public, it quickly became a global sensation, breaking several records and even turning into one of the fastest-selling non-fiction books of all time. On the other hand, there has been constant speculation surrounding Meghan Markle’s potential to write her own memoir, especially after the success of Harry’s book. However, it has now been reported that, despite several highly profitable publishing deals, the Duchess is choosing not to move forward with the idea, at least for now.
As reported by OK! Magazine, a source claimed that Markle does not currently want to pursue a memoir. The person said, “Those [memoirs] are the types of projects they don’t want to do," despite mentioning that it is “the one area where Meghan has a lot of financial clout." Some even believe that her potential memoir could outshine Harry’s explosive 2023 release. That said, the couple is said to be extremely mindful of their actions and public image, with an insider noting that “Meghan and Harry are cautious about everything they do and say to uphold the standards of the monarchy.”
The source then went on to add, “They do the best they can not to upset the royals. Everyone who goes into business with them knows there are constraints, but it hurts the project's creativity. They are adamant about having creative control and final edit… and what they can’t say limits things.” This was evident when the Sussexes attended Kris Jenner’s lavish 70th birthday celebration in November last year and reportedly asked for certain images to be removed from Kim Kardashian’s Instagram page.
Incidentally, the Duchess of Sussex had previously spoken about the possibility of writing a memoir. During a surprise appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, she was asked, "You're a New York Times bestselling author. Would you ever write another book?" Responding to this, Meghan said, "Yes, maybe, for sure. I love, right now, working on everything in the space of hospitality and home and entertaining and food and those sorts of tips." The Duchess also clarified her stance on writing a memoir, saying, “I think people are often curious if I'm going to write a memoir, but I've got a lot more life to live before I'm there."
It’s worth noting that the Duchess of Sussex made her debut as an author by releasing the children's book, The Bench, which was published in June 2021, after the birth of Princess Lilibet. It soon joined the prestigious list of The New York Times Bestsellers in the children’s picture book category.
