Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have never shied away from public displays of affection at events. However, in a surprising turn of events, Markle’s recent TIME 100 Summit appearance was far different. Body language expert Judi James noted that when Harry reached out to show affection, Markle simply ignored him. She claims this proved that the Duke is the ‘spare’ in their marriage.
The painfully awkward moment between Harry and Markle occurred when he tried to help her out of their private car. As reported by the Daily Mail, as Harry reached out his hand to Markle, she instead hugged a woman who had turned out to greet them. As Harry's chivalry went unnoticed, what was obvious was that the snub left him embarrassed. Commenting on the same, James told the outlet, “Whether Harry's leading or lurking here, he appears to be in the role of 'spare,' displaying some awkward-looking body language poses while a more assured Meghan takes the starring role.” She added, “By the time they're arriving for the greetings, it seems to be Meghan very much in the lead while Harry lurks behind.”
The awkward video of Harry’s ‘spare’ moment went viral on X (formerly Twitter), and fans couldn’t stop chiming in with their two cents. A critic slammed, “Wig Hair and her Spare.” Another royal watcher noted, “She [woman who greeted the pair] sure backed away from Haz after hugging Megs.” Meanwhile, a fan quipped, “Oh Harry!! Who's the royal here?”
James also decoded Markle’s one key ‘non-verbal cue’ that she used to elevate her ‘star status’. She explained, “It's also called the 'broken wing' gesture, and although it suggests physical weakness or vulnerability, it reflects status power as in 'I don't need my hands as I have people to open my doors and tow me along.'” Meanwhile, Harry, she noted, “His jacket hangs open and his expression is more intense and less radiant than his wife's.” Following Markle’s appearance, the royal couple were captured again, this time leaving the side door flanked by security. Reflecting footage of the same, James opined, “Harry still in that same awkward-looking pose, but here his hands are at his side. His body language looks slightly off-script here as it's Meghan having to eye-check his face while holding out her hand to re-establish the romantic gesture.”
Harry and Markle attended the TIME 100 Summit in New York City on April 24. Despite their awkward interaction in public, Markle praised her loving husband on stage. As per Harper’s Bazaar, the Duchess of Sussex gushed, “To have a husband and a partner who is so supportive and kids who are healthy and happy, I never imagined at this point I would feel so happy and grateful, and I really do.”
