Insider Says Kate Middleton Declined Anna Wintour’s Met Gala Invite for a Personal Reason

From Zendaya to Naomi Osaka, the Met Gala has always pulled in a star-studded guest list every year, but there is one particular fashion icon that Anna Wintour desperately wants but hasn’t been able to snag so far, and it is none other than the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. However, there is a personal reason why the popular royal has continued to stay away from the exclusive event.
Middleton has certainly been a trailblazer in the fashion sphere, with her stunning sartorial tributes and symbolic diplomatic dressing. With her popularity and love for a good outfit, the princess would have been the perfect fit for fashion’s biggest night. And Wintour possibly knew that rather well. Perhaps that’s why the royal has been a pipedream for the former Vogue editor-in-chief. Rob Shuter recently quoted a source in his Substack post who claimed that the Princess has been Wintour’s pipe dream. “Kate is the one celebrity Anna wants and cannot get. That is the obsession,” the source said.
The royal family has had a sparkling, even if brief, legacy at the Met Gala. In 1996, just a few months after her divorce, Princess Diana had attended the event in a stunning blue Dior number. The moment eventually made its way to the fashion history pages. If Middleton, who is already likened to her mother-in-law at every step, were to walk the steps of the Met Museum on the first Monday of May, it is obvious she would revive those cherished memories. However, that is not the only reason why Wintour wants Middleton at the Met Gala. “This was never only about Diana. Anna wanted Kate because Kate is the ultimate prize,” a source close to the situation claimed.
Wintour reportedly pulled all stops to make sure Middleton attended the Met Gala this year, including putting in a word with King Charles and Queen Camilla, but to no avail. The reason why Middleton has avoided fashion’s biggest night is that she is well aware of what would be expected of her at the event. “Kate understood exactly what was being asked. This was not simply an invitation. It was an attempt to make her the defining image of the night — and she had no interest in playing that role,” a source said.
There is another emotional reason behind Middleton’s decision to not attend the Met Gala, and it definitely has something to do with her mother-in-law. “She was never going to turn herself — or Diana — into a Met Gala moment,” the source added.
