Princess Diana’s untimely death on August 31, 1997, sent shockwaves around the world, sparking a whirlwind of conspiracy theories. One such claim was that Diana was ‘nine to ten weeks pregnant’ at the time of the tragic crash. French investigative journalist, Chris Lafaille, made the bombshell claim, asserting that he had confidential hospital documents confirming the same.

Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed, and driver Henri Paul succumbed to their injuries while her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived. Diana initially was breathing and conscious when she was rescued from the debris. She passed at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital at 4:00 am. The French surgeon who carried out her post-mortem, in his reports, allegedly cited that the Princess was nine to ten weeks pregnant. This came to be the focus of Lafaille's book, Diana, The Inquiry They Never Published. Lafaille also reportedly reached out to top French officials like the Minister of the Interior, Jean-Pierre Chevenement, Health Minister, Bernard Kouchner, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hubert Vedrine, and Paris police chief, Martine Monteil.

Lafaille shared that he uncovered the hospital documents after scouring the archives of the Pitie-Saltpetriere. As quoted by Daily Express, he said, “It is a near certainty that Diana was nine to ten weeks pregnant at the time she died according to papers from the Paris Public Hospitals archives.” However, Laifaille alleged that the baby was not Dodi’s but of UK-based doctor, Hasnat Khan, who Diana previously dated. Lafaille stressed, “This document has never been claimed or proved to be a fake. If genuine, it would mean that Dodi wouldn't have fathered Diana’s unborn child as she had not met him nine weeks before her death."

Prosecuting authorities claimed that driver Paul was drunk when he was behind the wheel, causing the crash. However, Dodi's father Mohammad Al Fayed, believed that her son and the Princess were killed in a conspiracy by the royal family and intelligence services. He strongly believed that she was pregnant, but with his grandson. In 2003, he even went on the US TV programme Primetime on Air to claim that the Princess telephoned him to give the good news. During the trial after the accident, Mohammad told the jury that Diana had spoken to him before her death to reveal that she and Dodi were engaged. He yelled, “I am talking to the jury; they are ordinary people...You don’t see this as a major cover-up?”

The late Princess' passing has officially been attributed to the driver's blood alcohol level and the paparazzi that forced him to speed. But Mohammad has remained unconvinced. He claimed that the royal family strongly opposed Diana marrying an Egyptian Muslim and that she had confided in him personally, revealing that Prince Philip wanted her out of the picture.
