Prince Harry’s public plea to mend ties with his estranged family did nothing to heal the royal feud, reportedly only worsening the rift. As royal fans rooted for a meeting between the Duke of Sussex and his father, King Charles, on the latter’s trip to Canada, experts have argued that the meeting was always 'highly unlikely’ as the royal family sees Harry as a ‘loose cannon,’ who is best avoided.
Royal experts Helena Chard and Hilary Fordwich recently shared their thoughts about Harry’s equation with his father with Fox News Digital. According to the New York Post, Chard claimed, “Prince Harry is the King's flesh and blood, so of course he would like some sort of reconciliation with his youngest son.” However, she added that given Harry is still ‘full of animosity’ five years after his and Meghan Markle’s exit from the royal fold, this has not been so far possible. “Prince Harry has blown all trust and any reconciliation with his father and the royal family for the moment.”
Fordwich added that Harry going public with private family matters has eroded the King's trust. She explained, “King Charles cannot have a private conversation with his wayward son without the fear of Harry revealing to the media the content of such a private family discussion...Harry has willingly and knowingly caused pain and public damage via his actions, so the royal family views him as a 'loose cannon,' hence their reluctance to engage with him further.”
According to the expert, Harry’s BBC interview, in which he accused his father of being behind his taxpayer-funded security being stripped and endangering his life, has proven Charles's fears right. In the interview, the Duke had further alleged that the security move was a means of trapping him in the UK, to discourage leaving for the US. Harry had also addressed Charles’s cancer diagnosis, saying he does not know how much time his father has left, which added to growing public concern over the monarch's health. Fordwich asserted, “In particular, his public comments regarding his father's health and security were viewed as highly inappropriate, as well as counterproductive.”
Royal expert Shannon Felton Spence, meanwhile, claims that the father-son didn't meet because of logistics issues. Spence pointed out that royal international trips involve planning with "military precision, often months in advance.” She added, “Every moment is accounted for, every engagement tightly choreographed, and every detail managed with the gravitas of a diplomatic mission. These are not the kinds of trips where one can simply ‘pop down’ for a personal visit, no matter how close the geography may seem.” According to the Mirror, Harry flew to China for a global travel and tourism conference in Shanghai, amid the King’s trip to Canada.
