From Princess Diana’s timeless Cartier Tank watch to her ‘Love’ bracelet, every piece Meghan Markle wears carries a hidden meaning. Continuing this streak, at the NBA All-Star Game on February 15, she debuted a new sparkler on her right hand that has royal watchers taking a double-take. While cheering alongside Prince Harry at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, observers were immediately hooked on to her large oval-cut stone. Interestingly, this new addition marks a deliberate departure from her traditional wedding stack – and as per jewelry experts, the Duchess wearing it on her right hand has a strategic meaning behind it.

According to experts, the placement of the four-to-six carat stone is a calculated statement of self-governance. Trang Do, founder of the bespoke brand Kimjoux, told Daily Mail that the right-hand ring is the ultimate contemporary power move. “Wearing a significant ring on the right hand often symbolises independence, self-love, and personal power,” the expert highlighted. Rather than a gift from her husband, Do observed that the scale of the piece points toward a milestone the Duchess has authored for herself. “If confirmed natural and self-purchased, this could subtly signal a shift in personal narrative or a new chapter she’s choosing to mark independently."

The Duchess has never been one for a static look, and her jewelry is no exception. Her original 2017 ring was a cushion-cut diamond ring from Botswana flanked by two stones from Diana’s personal collection. Since then, the ring has undergone several changes. In 2019, the original gold band was replaced with a micro-pavé diamond band, and then a second change was noticed at the 2022 Invictus Games, with additional diamonds appearing to surround the central stone. A third redesign was also speculated when she attended the World Mental Health Day, with her central diamond appearing to have shifted to an emerald cut.

The new sparkler, however, feels like a departure from her engagement ring. “The stone appears noticeably warmer in tone,” Do noted, adding, “If it is a diamond, I would expect it to sit within a lower color range, which is actually very on-trend at the moment.” Whether it’s an anniversary update or a personal achievement trophy, one thing is clear: the Duchess is rewriting the rules of royal accessorizing. Do explained, “Many clients today are choosing to refresh their rings to mark milestones, whether an anniversary, a personal achievement, or a new chapter, rather than waiting for a traditional proposal moment.”

At the NBA All-Star game, Markle opted for a relaxed vibe and was seen wearing a navy Brochu Walker sweater and indigo jeans. As the Sussexes continue to carve out their independent global identity, this newly surfaced ‘elegant rather than ostentatious’ ring suggests that the Duchess of Sussex is truly holding the pen when it comes to rewriting her next chapter.
