Over the years, Prince William hasn't shied away from paving his own path. As per reports, the Prince, as heir to the throne, has strongly voiced against Prince Andrew having a role in the monarchy or softening stance on Prince Harry, against King Charles's wishes. William, who has chosen to ‘be his own man,’ recently also picked his late mother’s divorce lawyers for future representation. A royal source revealed that William is stepping away from Charles’ long-standing legal team, marking a break from tradition in the royal fold.
The royal insider, a friend of the Prince, claimed that William had hired Mishcon de Reya, the firm that finalized his parents' divorce. He parted ways with Charles’ choice of legal firm, Harbottle & Lewis. The source told the Daily Mail, “William wanted to strike out on his own. He did not want to continue using his father's lawyers. It’s as simple as that. He wants to be his own man.” Interestingly, Diana was extremely close to her lawyer, Lord Mishcon, who owns the firm. Reportedly, she even confided in him her strong fears that she would be murdered in a fake car accident.
Mishcon de Reya’s deputy chairman, Anthony Julius, has also long supported William throughout the years. He is one of the founding trustees of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and was vice-president until it shut down in 2012. Meanwhile, The Sun reports that William’s move has understandably not sat well with Harbottle & Lewis, given they have been representing the royal family for decades.
But the move hasn't come as a surprise. William has previously spoken about how he wants to branch out on his own in the monarchy. In a 2024 interview with the BBC, he said, “I'm trying to do it differently, and I'm trying to do it for my generation. And to give you more understanding around it, I'm doing it with maybe a smaller 'R' in the royal, if you like, that's maybe a better way of saying it.” In January 2025, he also broke royal tradition with a ‘powerful statement’ on Kate Middleton's 43rd birthday. As reported by The Mirror, he made a public declaration of love for his wife in a break from the royal ‘stiff-upper lip’. Royal historian Dr Tessa Dunlop told the outlet, “Gone are the days when royalty kept their distance…William is letting everyone know just how proud he is of his wife, and likewise what they have achieved together.”
The Prince of Wales is reportedly also set to break away from Charles in a strict royal protocol shake-up. Former Foreign Secretary William Hague told The Times, “William isn't interested in lengthy meetings or endless discussions. I've often heard him say, 'There's been too much talk, we need action.'” Meanwhile, Alastair Martin, who has worked for the King, also told the outlet that William prefers WhatsApp communication over Charles’s use of landline. He added, “There will be weekends when my WhatsApp messages will be in double figures and I will be very responsive.” The Prince has also allegedly started planning for his future when he eventually takes the throne.
