Prince George, 11, has stepped into a cherished royal tradition, joining his father, Prince William, 42, in the annual festive football match at Sandringham.

This event, historically featuring Prince Harry, 40, until 2016, now sees the young prince embracing his family's customs.

The match, a friendly game between Sandringham estate workers and local villagers, took place shortly before Christmas. The two future kings played on the same team, both wearing blue jerseys, with William sporting the number 18.

"It just looked like healthy father-and-son bonding time," an insider remarked.

Meanwhile, Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, supported from the sidelines. The future queen, dressed in a dark purple polo neck, light purple waistcoat, beige trousers and a green peaked cap, was seen encouraging her family.

Louis even joined his mother for a brief kickabout, adding to the day's familial atmosphere. Prince George's involvement in this tradition highlights his growing role within the royal family as full-time Crown duties are still many years away. Previously, he has accompanied his father to Aston Villa matches and England games at Wembley, sharing in Prince William's passion for football.

Notably, the Duke of Sussex's last appearance in this match came during his first Christmas spent with Meghan Markle, 43, then just his girlfriend. Since then, his relocation to California after marrying the ex-actress and stepping back from royal duties have led to his absence from such family events. His departure has paved the way for the next generation, with George now taking on roles once held by his uncle as William seeks to fill the gaps thanks to his feud with Harry.

"The royal family's Christmas traditions are deeply rooted, with the football match being a highlight," a royal source shared. "This event offers a glimpse into their private celebrations, emphasizing unity and continuity. The second in line to the throne's debut in the game signifies the passing of traditions to the younger royals, ensuring the family's customs endure."

As HRH continues to grow, his active participation in such events "reflects his preparation for future responsibilities," the source said.

"Engaging in these traditions allows him to understand and appreciate the royal family's heritage, fostering a sense of duty and connection," they concluded.

As the Wales children mature, their individual personalities continue to shine with each bringing unique qualities to the family's public engagements.

The next heir to the throne's alignment with his father, Charlotte's elegance and Louis' playfulness paint a picture of "a well-rounded family," navigating their royal duties with grace and warmth.
