LIVE: Prince William and Princess Kate Make Surprise Visit to Belfast
The Prince and Princess of Wales visit The Commons, a former church turned community hub in South Belfast, to see how William’s Homewards programme is helping young people into work.
Was Princess Kate's look a nod to the Emerald Isle?
The Princess of Wales appeared to borrow a page from Queen Elizabeth II’s book, wearing green for her Belfast visit in what looked like a tribute to the Emerald Isle. The late Queen often wore a country’s colors or emblems on her visits, a quiet mark of respect for the place she was in.
The Princess of Wales chose a belted green tartan skirt, reportedly by Emilia Wickstead, for the Belfast visit. She paired it with a white ruffled blouse and a tailored long coat, and carried a black umbrella against the rain.
It’s a rainy welcome for the Prince and Princess of Wales
Rain greeted the Prince and Princess of Wales as they arrived in Belfast today. They began their engagements at The Commons on Ormeau Road, where they are meeting employers, support organizations and young people on the New Employment Opportunities Network (NEON). The pilot, run through Homewards, helps vulnerable young people into sustainable work and build confidence in their new roles. Its success has led to the approach being scaled across four other Homewards locations. The couple will also learn about the role that employers, public services, and community organizations play in helping people thrive. Homewards is William’s five-year program to make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated.
