Prince William, King Charles and Queen Camilla and other senior royals donned the traditional blue velvet robes and ostrich feather-plumed hats for today's Order of the Garter ceremony, a tradition dating back to 1348. Garter Day 2026 kicks off at Windsor

The Order of the Garter, founded in the 14th century, is the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain, traditionally reserved for the monarch, the Prince of Wales, and a select group of knights and ladies chosen for their public service.

Garter Day, held every June, sees members process in their iconic blue velvet robes and plumed hats from Windsor Castle to St George's Chapel for a service of thanksgiving, the same chapel where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in 2018.
Each knight is required to display a banner of their arms in the chapel, along with a helmet, crest, sword, and enameled stallplate, markers that remain even after death as part of one of the world's finest heraldic collections.
